The flavor of lemon is bright, refreshing, and perfect for summer. Instead of lemon bars, try this easy lemon dump cake recipe. It's flavored with cream cheese and poppy seeds for a twist on the classic quick bread. And a few shortcuts help keep the prep simple and easy—just how summer baking should be.

Lemon Poppy Seed Dump Cake Ingredients

Here's a quick look at what you'll need to make this lemon dump cake with cream cheese.

  • Pie Filling: You'll need a large can of pie filling for this recipe. You can find it alongside the canned fruit in your grocery store.
  • Cake Mix: We chose yellow cake mix, but you could easily swap in white cake mix if you prefer.
  • Cream Cheese: Our recipe testers liked the tangy flavor that cream cheese added to the dish. It helps cut through the sweetness of the pie filling.
  • Poppy Seeds: These are optional, but we loved how it echoes the flavors of classic lemon-poppy seed bread.
  • Butter: Dotting butter on top adds richness and moisture to the finished dump cake recipe.

Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray

  • 1 (21 to 22 ounce) can lemon pie filling

  • 1 package (2-layer size) white or yellow cake mix

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, cut into 18 pieces

  • 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds (optional)

  • 3/4 cup butter, thinly sliced

  • Sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 3-qt. rectangular baking dish with nonstick spray.

  2. Spread lemon pie filling in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange small pieces of cream cheese over the pie filling.

  3. Sprinkle the cake mix over the cream cheese. Top with poppy seeds (if using). Place butter slices evenly over the cake mix.

  4. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until browned. Let cool 15 minutes before serving. Top servings with whipped cream or ice cream.
